DEYE
Brand new Deye is a binocular eye-tracker, an eye pointing system that tracks the movement of both eyes. Thanks to Deye, individuals with extremely limited residual motor abilities can translate the movement of their eye to regular mouse movement.
Overview
Eye-tracking is considered one of the latest forms of accessibility to any computer. Wherever there is minimal residual movement, pairing it with a button to facilitate the selection that otherwise occurs with a timed auto select system.
Autoselect
This is an automatic selection that activates after a configurable period of time, during which an object on the screen is focused upon. In this mode, the individual only needs to focus on an icon or button for a predefined time.
Blinking
The user selects the icon by a slowly closing his/her eyelid – this is the equivalent to a double click on a mouse.
The Deye eye-tracker is recommended for individuals with moderate movement disorders as well as users with more compromised neuromotor abilities that only allow them some weak residual movements, such as patients with ALS, SMA, patients with quadriplegia with severe difficulties with the upper limbs and patients with serious trauma. This system is also recommended for people with language and writing problems. Its compensation of head movements guarantees the system high stability margins and means that the aid can be used by individuals with severe dystonia.
The Dialog eye-tracker was produced with the best pupil-tracking technologies in terms of software and hardware. Deye is one of the few eye-trackers to use both Dark and Bright eye-detection technologies. Thanks to an indicator, the revolutionary tracker also aids its correct positioning.
The most important phase when installing an eye pointing system is the position of the aid. For correct placement, it is necessary to position the eye-tracker 40-80cm from the user’s face, which must be parallel with the electronic computer.

Once you have a good position, as described in the previous section, the system must be calibrated. This is done by focusing on the small circles shown by the eye-tracker A software (there are 9 dots by default), making sure to move only the eyes, not the head.
The system’s pointing algorithm was designed to tolerate head movements – the system can recognise if the movement is a voluntary input in order to facilitate pointing at a fixed point on the screen. The Deye system can add head movement to eye movement, thereby facilitating the patient’s effort.
Deye can be configured to work in different modes depending on the client’s eye characteristics or problems. The eye-tracker can be set up in binocular mode if there are no eye problems. If there is a problem with the eye, Deye can be set up to work in the following modes: Mono Right Eye, Mono Left Eye or Right with Left reinforcement or vice versa.
Deye was made with both Dark and Bright pupil detection technologies. With Bright Pupil, the eye acts as a reverse reflector, so the pupil is presented as a bright white circle. With Dark Pupil, the pupil appears dark because the reverse-reflection of the retina is direct and far away from the camera. The advantage is that of making the pupil darker compared to normal light conditions.
The tracking algorithm not only possesses high head movement tolerance, it has the added advantage of vectorising the head movement and adding it to the eye movement. This process is possible thanks to three different algorithms that work simultaneously. The first algorithm tracks the position of the face, the second the position of the eye area, and the third tracks eye movement.
The DEYE eye-tracker was produced in accordance with the essential requirements of Legislative Decree No. 46/97 of 24 February 1997, which incorporated Directive 93/42/CEE on medical devices and as amended by Legislative Decree of 25 January 2010 No. 37.
The “DEYE” eye-tracker is registered in the medical devices directory with registration No. 1445692/R. The above device was classified as belonging to Class I.
